Mind Set Change.

Its shit how we Australian graduates (or any other graduates that aren’t from UBD or UK) still get discriminated here in brunei as if are a different race and not Bruneians. I mean. fuck off lah. seriously. I am sick of people giving me the condesending look whenever i tell them that i’ve graduated from Melbourne and not “NOttingham” or “birmingham” or “manchaster” or “henglan” or “landan” . Although this is not a new experience for me. I’ve had people giving me shit since i started my Year 11 education at a all girl’s boarding school in Melbourne. Which was a goood 7 years ago. They’d be like “Mana ko krg ani”. and ill be like “melbourne”. and they’ll be like kenapa inda “UK??” accompanied by that look that says “mahal kah uk inda mampu?” . and i’ll be like “inda. malas ku ke UK atu. jauh.” and they will proceed to brag to me and my sisters how their anaks, anak tiri, cucu, cucu bapanya, cucu nininya, anak tiri bapanya semua ke uk.

I’ve recently got the same comment from a Doctor i visited at a local clinic. Where she had asked me in a british accent where i have graduated from… like wise, the same conversation as above followed through.

me: melbourne.
her: kenapa australia.
me: i dont know. i like it there.
her: scholarship kah?
me: inda.
her: self funded?
me: yes.
her: oh.. the education in australia is cheaper kah?
me: no not really. its about the same. education wise. but standard of living maybe. depends how you live.
her: oh. no. but its still cheaper. u know. with the currency exchange of UK now.
me: kenapa you di uk kah?
her: *mcm terasa*.. awu.

PADANTAH. ko tau kah. i didn’t choose MELBOURNE because i cant afford to go to the UK. I chose Melbourne. cause melbourne is the place to be. i didn’t want to be SWARMED with culture shocked brueneians who pressure themselves with new upcoming designer BAGS and the latest trends in cocktails at funky buddha? (whatever that place is called!). i dont give a shit. boring bah boring. KE LANDAN atu CLICHE sudah bah. mcm wayang superman. and you can just go “oh i study law in nottingham.” anytime when it really should be “Oh i studied LAW in a SHIT school in Nottingham.” I acknowledge that UK is one of the established education providers in this world. But common lah, just because he or she is a uk graduate doesn’t mean that they’re all that.

It’s not that i’ve never been to london, infact, i would love to go again ..its just that i don’t understand bah.. why other qualifications that aren’t from UK are still seen as lower. Australian education are ranked highly or more or less the same as uk education in our neighbouring countries like singapore, malaysia. We need a mind set change.

I apologize if ive offended anyone tapikan sadang sadang style lama ani bah. buring bah. beg gucci tebali kamu style baru.

oh. and UK can eff off.,I dont care what you people say, im going back to melbourne to do my masters where i can still sleep comfortably on my laura ashely sheets and spend the other half of my allowance on something better other than RENT.

pebaik tah skulah di india tu.

kiss me.

  1. i’d rather be in australia and be rich!!! hohohoho!! serius nuuuu. but yeas. wassup with people yang bangga skulah sini padahal SKULAH URANG BUDOH?! i admit my uni aint the best… and i’m actually embarassed of where i chose to go to school… :$ anyway. point is. i’d rather be there.

  2. I’ve read about this discrimination on Oz’s graduate somewhere recently. I think its weird. I dont understand why many think that UK education is the top when its actually only if one studies in undisputed top unis like oxford or cambridge then you have a right to brag lah kan? like kalau uni yang biasa-biasa tu, some of Australia’s or even States uni have better standards lagi.
I agree, a serious mindset change is required. Just ignore them!

  3. Bloody oath mate! Ani misti ku lumpat2 menyokong ni eh!! I chose to go to Australia too because the You Kay was swarming with Brewnians seeking bragging rights on having studied in the you kay. I chose a path less traveled and never looked back!

  4. GOD-NESSS!! Faluiii jua doctor ah!! Bila ia graduate ah TAUN ANAM??.. Open your eyes jaaaa!!.. Nda kau tampar skali gtau ia “AWU AKU KAN SKULAH DI OSTRORIA SEBAB RUMAH KU SUDAH DI LONDON JAAAA”.. talur2!!

  5. I can see that you’re in the job market now Syazzy…good luck 🙂 But before that, i would like to congratulate u for graduating Uni. What you’re experiencing now is the same like what i experienced before after i graduated from Uni…(tambah lagi dari UBD) all you gotta do is just remain strong, be tough and sabarrrrrr….dont care when people give u the stick cos by the end of the day…its always about you…and what you have achieved ..a degree…:)

  6. Thanks for pointing it out ti. Misti mau kena bedal bah dorang2 yang inda paham atu. Kira skulah saja jauh ke u.k tapi inda open mindeddd hahaha Dorang Gucci-Minded saja.

P.S: We miss you! Diam apartment kau nada. Sunyi-sepi rasanya.

  7. it is funny isn’t it? padahal Australian education much stricter compared to UK. Hell… they’d kick us out if we dont perform well, which happened to some of my friends dulu, 24 hours lagi tu kana transport balik ke negara masing2.

    ehhhh..emosi aku ah. heheheh…

    with love,
    australian graduate

  8. Ha..ha…No worry mates..U all tau juz to share my experience why at last me landed d melbourne..i did my homework and research b4 i came here, and i found out that d sini tah ganya yg d skill dat i want, not a theory dat i can read in my home sweet home. Me dah compare wit UK uni punya course content not much actually, even pernah liat how graduate from uk keraja..huh..malas nak cakap..its goes back to attitude bukan being d mana ia graduate, d england kah, d mana kah…, dont worry syaz im 100% backing..i know u from my fren d sini, tapi we nda pernah jumpa coz we kemari u balik, i think pernah kali ku tliat d city, masa kami jln2..

  9. im with you. im with you!

although most of my friends uk graduates they very much appreciate OZ education and OZ way of living!

suka diurang tempat ku tinggal walaupun rentnya murah dari diurang.

plus plus. you dont have to go through jetlah lah. time difference lah. abis2 3 jam. haha.

also. SASS & BIDE MURAH KALI AH DI AUSTRALIA. MEMBALI TAH DIURANG DI UK. MAHAL.

huhuhu. love you! good luck with job hunting.

p.s. the discrimination made me go back to do my masters. skadar ku nda berhonours. honours are by invitation only. sorrryyyy.

  10. im with you on this syaz!! aku mau ikut ranting jua ni hehehe *sorryy teluan over ni krg aku ani*

i graduated from uk, but ofcoz the place i went to isnt the effing top ten ones, im sorry lah,im a private student, aku bukan scholars jua so i cant afford yg top ten top ten ani, and then come job interviews, pfftttt, i got offended when they pick subjects on where i graduated from, telling me the place i graduated from is “not that good” blablabla… and then worst, they asked me why i graduated at the age of 21???? like hellooo, ani kan interview apakan ni???

ok ok ter off track. but rily ahh membari sanak urang cemani ani…semua kan salah2…dimanatah baik ja??? di ubd di ozzie atau di uk ja semua jua kan kamu discriminate now, manatah yg baik ni??? i soo agree with u, they shud change their mindsets ihh mun cani, inda pedah2 ketani kana antar belajar jauh ulih parents kana discriminate jua. HUH. panas panas. hahaha. u shud hav told the doc syaz(or sapa saja yg beckap catu nanti), peduli ku ja ehh, bapaku ngantar ja!!! biar ya diam.

  11. been in your shoes…. countless time. My scholarship to oversea to do my first degree was ” directed” to UBD instead. I spent 4 yrs doing much more work than my friend who did it in UK.

In many Brunei institutions, UK grads are much more highly perceived than UBD grads, even if we are more experienced than them .

I did my masters, again in UBD because I didn’t want to leave my family. Again, work is harder… and still UK grads wins.

No matter what are the perceptions, I always do my best. When I taught O’level Biology, my result was top 5 for 5 yrs in a row amongst schools in Brunei… now I am promoted to teach form 6.

The thing is always prove yourself no matter what .. never give up and never listen to negative critisms… good luck to you.
